Still Shining Bright
KT Tunstall recently graced Dolan’s with an incredible live show. Born in 1975, KT first came to prominence in 2004 after a phenomenal live solo performance. In the years since, KT has released numerous albums, toured the world and, as of recently, reached 7 million in album sales. An avid political advocate, KT has repeatedly stood by her principals and performed at live political events. With some songs that have truly remained in the public subconscious, such as “Suddenly I See”, every song that I’ve heard from her is extremely well written and, based on the gig, performed live just as well.
A Night of Connection and Celebration
The gig took place on Dolan’s main stage. With a room entirely packed, the band took the stage and immediately began to rock. The energy on stage was palpable. It was very clear that the band had a very good report. Stu Wilkinson played guitar, rocking and keeping up the pace with the rest of the band. The drummer, Andy Burrows was celebrating his birthday, mere days after KT herself had celebrated her own birthday. PB, a band member that allegedly never makes an appearance on stage, also made a rare appearance. KT herself brought an incredible energy to the evening. Sporting a Debbie Harry t-shirt, KTs crowd work is second to non. She spent the evening between songs having an open conversation with the audience. This added hugely to the investment in the show.
Given the cramped venue, the sound was near perfect. Clear audio, smooth guitar transitions and non stop entertainment for almost 2 hours, the show was a delight. The room at one point got so warm, KT had a fan brought on stage just to cool down. It was clear that the band were not just familiar with one anothers playing style. They all genuinely enjoyed themselves and it was felt in the music.
Setlist Highlights & Surprises
“Suddenly I See”, KTs most popular song, had the audience jumping. A fantastic show, pitch perfectly performed. This was arguably the highlight of the evening, getting to see KT perform this globally known hit. The band did and incredible job with every song but, this was certainly a standout.
KT also performed some covers. After discussing her love of the Talking Heads and their unique appearance and energy, she performed “Psycho Killer”. This was a huge hit, hearing an amazing version in a new light. I was surprised by the appearance of this song but delighted by the rendition.
Towards the end of the show, KT performed the classic song made famous in the movie Breakfast Club, “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”. Apparently the band, Simple Minds were playing in Dublin at the time, and clearly this song was on KT’s mind. This cover, as a sign off, was incredible and nostalgic.
An Unmissable Performance
Every song that was played that evening was given 100%. Nothing was half-assed or phoned in. It’s clear to me that KT and the band have earned every bit of their fame. I cant recommend seeing them enough, if you ever have the opportunity. What an fantastic show.
