Snoop Dogg to Date
Snoop Dogg is, and has been for some time, one of the biggest names in the Hip-Hop world. With several albums, collaborations and various other ventures, he’s one of the most recognised names in the music industry. Bringing out his first album in 1993, Snoop was an early influence in the Rap world. Having surpassed having a purely musical career, Snoop Dogg has acting credits, multiple businesses and is generally known for appearing in ventures when you least expect him. Notably. Snoop, in recent years, had some experience cooking with Martha Stewart. With such a storied career, its no shock that he has just released the song “Getting Gone” with ERNEST.
An Ernest Introduction
ERNEST, who is the lead musician on this track, is a country musician who I hadn’t heard of prior to this song. With 3 studio albums released to date, beginning in 2019, ERNEST is just beginning to make a name for himself. This song alone, to me at least, is a huge endorsement. I haven’t always been country music’s biggest fan but this song may be enough to make me reconsider. With a strong voice and an almost familiar riff, this kind of music is what I would like all country to be like.
“Getting Gone”
“Getting Gone” is a track that was recorded as part of the Cadillac sessions. This was a collaborative album between ERNEST, Rhys Rutherford, Cody Lohden and Chandler Walters. This track in particular is notable for Snoops contributions. Snoop, while known for being open to collaborations in almost anything, hasn’t participated in the country genre before. Its surprising then, that this song just feels like it was meant to be.
Snoops Success
The song is polished, with familiar honky tonk style guitar tastefully peppered in. While ERNEST has a good voice, Snoop Dogg’s voice compliments the song surprisingly well. Its the surprise that adds so much to this song. I could see this being added to driving playlists. It just plays well. Like the best country, this walks the genre line, having folky and even slightly bluesy licks. It also has a soul element. ERNEST appears to know what he’s doing. Featuring Snoop Dogg on this song has certainly brought in a whole new audience. The two even did a live show on the Late Show in the US. The pair seem to work well together, with Snoop adding his signature style without compromising the overall tone of the song.
The Positives
The guitarwork is great, with the main sound brought in with a telecaster for classic licks. The rest of the band compliments the rest, giving the song a real honky tonk feel. Apart from the lyrics, it sounds almost like a cross between something the Rolling Stones would do and something you’d hear in an old western. While the backing doesn’t blow you away, it all works together well to create a perfect backing to this experimental fusion. Not only was it exciting to hear Snoop Dogg collab on this song, it also makes me excited to listen to some of ERNESTS other works.
Final Thoughts
While I’m sure this isn’t a permanent career shift for Snoop Dogg, it was fun to hear him delve into something outside his comfort zone. I expect him to continue delving into more genres in the future and continuing to be unpredictable. ERNEST on the other hand, appears to know what he’s doing musically. Only a few years into his musical career, he’s already collaborating with one of the biggest name in the music industry. It will be interesting to follow his career, which I’m sure is only going to get more exciting.
